''This is particularly appalling'' PDP attacks presidency for referencing killings while party was in government
Earlier today, presidential media aide, Femi Adesina, attacked PDP for holding a 7-day mourning period for victims of the massacre that took place in Plateau state over the weekend. Femi in his statement listed the number of mass killings that took place while PDP was in power.
In a statement released this evening, the opposition party condemned the presidency for making reference to killings that took place while they were in ofice. Read the statement below
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) expresses shock by the statement credited to the Buhari Presidency justifying its failure to stem the tide of killings and bloodletting in the country, particularly in the Plateau, Zamfara, Benue, Yobe, Adamawa, Borno, Kogi, Taraba and other troubled states.
It is indeed reprehensible that the Presidency in its usual arrogance and insensitivity to the mood of the nation chose to condemn the PDP for declaring a seven-day mourning and flying our flags at half-mast in honour of the dead and solidarity with the bereaved.
It is disturbing that even in death, the Buhari Presidency still wants to deny these victims of callous murder the honour of being mourned.
We are particularly appalled that instead of joining Nigerians in mourning the dead and seeking ways to stem the escalation of the bloodletting under its watch, the Buhari Presidency is engaged in morbid reference to past killings as if the lives of Nigerians have no value under President Buhari's watch.
The PDP, as a party, will continue to identify with Nigerians at this troubled time irrespective of ethnic, religious and political affiliations and will therefore not allow itself to be dragged into a needless mire with the Buhari Presidency, which has shown by its statement, that it has no iota of regard for the lives of Nigerians.
PDP urges the Buhari Presidency to confront the challenge of fulfilling the basic responsibility of governance by providing security to the lives and property of all Nigerians irrespective of their creed, tribe and political affiliations.
Finally, the PDP assures Nigerians that we will not be deterred in speaking out against the killings and the failure of the Buhari administration to take concrete steps to stem this ugly tide.

Messi Stole The Golden Ball Award From Me In 2005, Now He Will Pay Back
Super Eagles captain Mikel Obi has claimed Lionel Messi 'stole' the Golden Ball award from him at the 2005 FIFA U-20 World Cup held in the Netherlands.
While speaking in an interview with The Guardian ahead of Tuesday’s crucial Group D Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup clash against Messi-led Argentina side, Super Eagles captain, John Mikel Obi, opened up on his desire to revenge against Messi after losing his Golden Ball award to him.
Recall that Argentina star, Lionel Messi “stole” the Golden Ball award from Mikel at the 2005 FIFA U-20 World Cup held in the Netherlands.
Before Nigeria and Argentina went into the final, Mikel was tipped to be awarded the Golden Ball for his impressive performances, but the Flying Eagles faced lost 2-1 no thanks to two penalties converted by Messi.
Reflecting on how he missed out on the Most Valuable Player award, Mikel said; “Yeah, Messi stole the Golden Ball off me.
“Before the game people said that I was going to win the Golden Ball for being the player of the tournament. But then Messi scored twice, both of them penalties, Argentina won 2-1 and I got the Silver Ball. Messi has kept on stealing awards from me!” Mikel recalled how the Super Eagles were able to beat Argentina 4-2 in last year’s friendly without Messi, positing the South Americans always struggle without their talisman.
He said; “A certain human being wasn’t playing (in last year’s friendly). Actually, is he even a human being? Messi is Messi. He decides games and the last time we met he scored two against us at the Brazil World Cup.
“Without him, they are definitely less of a team. We can’t put all our attention on Messi but he is the man that we need to stop. Do we have to put somebody to mark him? Maybe yes, maybe no because when you do that you are playing with less balance.”
The Tianjin Teda midfielder spoke about playing in different midfield positions during his time at Chelsea and for the Super Eagles.
“I was playing as a No 10 before I went to Chelsea but [José] Mourinho converted me to a holding player.
“I enjoy it. When I was at Chelsea and there was a national team break, I’d go there and I’d enjoy it. I’d have this one or two weeks of freedom – to express myself and play the way I want. But at Chelsea, I did a job.
“We knew we would get them. I said to a friend of mine: ‘Trust me, Argentina are going to be in the same group as us.’ It’s crazy. I don’t know why but it keeps happening.”

A night to forget for Cristiano Ronaldo
Late penalty holds Portugal to runner-up spot in Group B
MARCA's VAR: Cristiano Ronaldo's action is not a red
Portugal conceded a late equaliser and, therefore, could only muster a 1-1 draw against Iran, leaving them second in Group B and facing the daunting task of taking on Uruguay.
For Cristiano Ronaldo in particular, this was an evening to forget.
The No.7 started well and was lively early on, but he worsened as the game went on and had a poor second half, missing a 53rd minute penalty, with Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand saving well.
Seven minutes from time, Ronaldo could even have been sent off for a clash with Saeed Ezatolahi, but the referee decided to let him off with a booking after consulting VAR.
Then came the late Iranian equaliser, when Karim Ansarifard did what the Real Madrid man could not and scored from the spot.
After an excellent start to the tournament in Russia, this performance is one Ronaldo will want to move on from quickly.

Former Ivory Coast captain, Didier Drogba has told the Super Eagles of Nigeria that they will go home if they start defending against Argentina.
Argentina is Nigeria’s next opponent in the 2018 World Cup going on in Russia.
As Nigeria prepares to take on the South Americans on Tuesday, Drogba advised them to keep to their style of play if they are to go far at the 2018 World Cup.
Gernot Rohr’s men came alive again in their bid of reaching the knockout stages after beating Iceland 2 – 0 in their second Group D match on Friday.
Drogba told BBC Sport that the Eagles must keep to their aggressive and fast style of playing if they want to go far at the tournament.
The former Chelsea striker said, “It has been a disappointing start to the World Cup for Africa – until Nigeria beat Iceland on Friday.
“There had been six defeats in seven games for the five African countries in Russia. So it was great to see the Super Eagles win , but the way they did it was just as important and impressive.
“In the second half, Nigeria came to life and played the way I want to see all the African teams play – going on the attack, using their pace and power, and having lots of shots.
“That is what I did not see in their first game against Croatia , when Nigeria were playing within themselves – keeping a good shape , playing safe, and passing the ball from side to side.
“This time, they went out just to win. They played with two strikers and they were so fast and aggressive going forward that they frightened Iceland.
“They were spontaneous and exciting, which is the way I expected them to play at this World Cup – and that is why they won the game.
“The point I am making is that they need to keep their identity as a team. It is important they keep doing that if they are going to reach the last 16. If they decide to stay defensive and start fearing conceding goals, they will be going home.”

Russia 2018: Why we lost to Nigeria – Iceland Coach
Heimir Hallgrimsson, the coach of Iceland, on Friday in Volgograd blamed fate for his team’s 0-2 loss to Nigeria in Group D of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
“My players performed in line with instructions all the same, the fact that the result was not good does not mean they did not do well.
“I praise them because they played against a very good Nigerian side,’’ he said at the post-match conference at the Volgograd Arena.
The coach, who said he expected the Eagles to play the way they played against them, however agreed that his team’s tactics did not work the way they planned it.
“It is unfortunate that we lost to Nigeria in spite of the way we planned for the game.
“We did our best to prepare for them, especially the three-man defence line. We even prepared in case they played a four-man defensive formation,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that after a goalless first first half, two goals by Ahmed Musa in the second stanza helped to keep the Super Eagles in contention.
Hallgrimsson however commended Nigeria’s coach Gernot Rohr for coming out with tactics which neutralised his team’s offensive, especially in the second half.
He equally did not fail to commend his players for putting in their best in the face of the situation.
“Even though we lost to Nigeria, all the same the players tried their best,” the coach said.
Hallgrimsson promised that his team would come all out against Croatia on June 26 in spite of Friday’s defeat, hopeful they would win to be in line for qualification.
“We know the Croatians. We have played against them four times and we know how to handle them,” he said.

Blood moon 'to bring end of the world' as stargazers enjoy longest lunar eclipse this century
A spectacular blood moon is set to light up the sky next month - and it will be the end of the world as we know it, according to doomsday preachers.
End-of-days religious leaders who have incorrectly predicted the apocalypse time and time again are back at it ahead of a lunar eclipse on July 27.
The 21st century's longest lunar eclipse will last almost two hours and feature a blood moon where the moon has a red tinge.
While stargazers enjoy the dazzling phenomenon, doomsdayers will be preparing for armageddon.

The 21st century's longest lunar eclipse will last almost two hours and feature a blood moon where the moon has a red tinge.
While stargazers enjoy the dazzling phenomenon, doomsdayers will be preparing for armageddon.
The hypothesis was originally made famous by Christian ministers John Hagee and Mark Biltz who said the ongoing "tetrad" - four consecutive lunar eclipses which began in April 2014 with six full moons in between - is the indicator of the end of earth as described in the Bible in Acts 2:20 and Revelation 6:12.
However the tetrad ended in September 2018 and we're all still here.
The end-of-days preachers insist some sort of tragic event is set to hit earth and possibly wipe it out.
But it has been routinely dismissed by astronomers and other experts as a myth.
Scientists say the red tinge is due to Rayleigh scattering of sunlight through the Earth's atmosphere.
It also causes the reddening of the sun at sunset.

According to Elijah, all personnel of the school security at the main Gate, Extension and Back gate have stepped-up their operations by monitoring students closely even to the extent of going to classes to check if there is any student who is dressed against the rule of the school and has succeeded in sneaking into the lecture halls.
It was observed that the school management has considered indecent dressing as a capital offense in the campus and has decided to go tough on students putting on crazy jeans, crazy hairstyles, and those who put on slippers to campus.
Hence, students who are caught in the act have their crazy and seductive wears torn into pieces and after wards prevented from entering the campus.

“We Have Not Released Guidelines For 2019 Elections” – PDP
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that its guidelines for 2019 presidential primary election was not yet ready.
The party disclosed this in a statement issued by its National Organising Secretary, Austin Akobundu, on Sunday in Abuja.
Mr Akobundu said that the clarification became necessary following a publication by a national daily titled “PDP list guidelines for presidential aspirants, demands N12m for forms.
“We wish to state categorically that the party is still in the process of drawing up the guidelines for its presidential primary election.
“It is therefore misleading to claim that the party has ‘listed its guidelines’ not to talk of the cost of nomination forms.
“At the appropriate time the proposals will be presented to NEC of the party which will approve as it deems fit.
“Only then can one say that it has the guidelines for the 2018 presidential primary election.”
Mr Akobundu said that the party’s National Working Committee under the leadership of Prince Uche Secondus, was committed to adhering strictly to the PDP constitution.
He noted that the constitution in Chapter 8 (50) (1) grants NEC the power to formulate the guidelines for aspirants in any of its Party Primaries, the presidential primary inclusive.
Mr Akobundu appreciated the interest in the party’s electoral processes and said PDP was always ready to respond to any enquiries and to make all necessary information available.
The national organising secretary urged the general public, party members and they PDP presidential aspirants to disregard the said publication.
“The authentic guidelines for PDP presidential primary election will be released as soon as they are considered by the organs of the party.”
